Welcome to Africa Umoja Association Inc.
Africa Umoja Association Inc. is a not-for-profit incorporated association dedicated to fostering unity, cultural preservation, and community support among Africans in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia. “Umoja” means unity in Swahili, reflecting our core commitment to bringing people together for mutual growth and solidarity. Established under the Associations Incorporation Act 2015, we operate as a member-driven organization focused on promoting intercultural understanding and empowering our community.
Our Objectives
Our association is guided by a clear set of purposes aimed at enhancing the lives of our members and the broader community:
Promote Unity and Cooperation: We work to build strong bonds among Africans living in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia.
Preserve and Celebrate African Culture and Heritage: Through events, workshops, and initiatives, we honor and share the rich traditions of African heritage.
Provide Support and Advocacy: We advocate for the welfare and integration of Africans into Australian society, offering guidance on social, economic, and cultural challenges.
Encourage Development: We support educational, professional, and entrepreneurial growth among members to help them thrive in Australia.
Promote Intercultural Understanding: We bridge connections between African communities and the wider Australian public to foster mutual respect and collaboration.
Foster Solidarity: In times of need—such as crises, bereavement, or illness—we provide support to members, embodying a spirit of self-reliance and community care.
These objectives ensure that all our activities align with promoting harmony, empowerment, and cultural exchange.
Our Structure and Governance
As an incorporated not-for-profit body, our property and income are solely applied toward achieving our objectives—no profits are distributed to members. We are governed by a management committee, including a chairperson, secretary, treasurer, and ordinary committee members, elected by our membership. Key operational details include:
Financial Year: Runs from 1 July to 30 June each year.
Meetings: A quorum of 50% of voting members is required for general meetings, and 50% of committee members for committee meetings.
Membership Classes: We offer ordinary membership with full voting rights for those aged 15 and above
Eligibility and Joining: Anyone who supports our objectives can apply. Applications require a nomination from an existing member and committee approval. Membership fees are determined by the committee and must be paid annually.
We maintain a register of members in compliance with legal requirements, ensuring transparency and accountability. Disciplinary actions, disputes, and mediations are handled fairly under our rules to uphold the interests of the association.
Our Commitment
Africa Umoja Association Inc. is more than an organization—it’s a family united by shared heritage and a vision for a brighter future. We comply with all relevant laws, including the Associations Incorporation Act 2015, and operate with integrity as a Tier 1 association (or as applicable based on our scale).
